Homework Project - Game/Toy Inventor

For our homework project this half term, we would like you to become Toy/game inventors. What do you think it would be like working for Santa, at this time of year? We would like you to invent a new toy, game or app for a tablet/ipad. This DOESN'T have to be a real working model, rather an idea, plan or design.

First, you need to choose the AGE range you would like to create for, then the THEME of the game/toy, followed by the RULES or INSTRUCTIONS. You will also need to think about how many people are needed to play the game/toy, as well as the EQUIPMENT that is required.

Once you have your idea, we would like you to present it in one of the following ways;

  • A prototype of the game
  • An advertising poster
  • An advertising TV advert
  • An instruction booklet with rules and pictures
  • Or your own way of presenting - Be Creative!!
Have fun inventing !!!

The homework project is due in on Monday 15th December!

Children in Need 2014

The theme for this year's Children in Need appeal is "Be A Hero!" As such, we would like children to dress up as one of their heroes when they come to school on Friday 14th November - this does not just have to be someone like Batman or Wonder Woman! Your child can dress as someone that is a hero to them; a policeman, a paramedic, a celebrity or a teacher (*hint*hint*). If your child is coming to school in fancy dress, we would ask you to send them with a donation of 50p to £1.

Each year group will also have their own giant cut-out Pudsey Bear to cover with loose change - and the children from the year group that collects the most loose change will receive a special certificate to put in their Record of Achievement! So dig deep, and raid those piggy-banks!

Pudsey Bear wristbands will be on sale from Monday 10th November in the KS2 Hall for £1. Miss Page will also be selling her ever-popular Pudsey Bear badges for 50p at the same time! We have lots of opportunities to raise a stellar amount of money.

SPLAT Play in a Day

Just a little reminder; the Year 5 children are lucky enough to be joined in school, by the SPLATS Play in a day team on Thursday 11th September. Throughout their time in school, SPLATS will work with all children to produce a play based on Robin Hood. All children will be taking part and will have many important jobs to do, such as prop and costume making, as well as an acting role in the play.
We will be in school all day, so no other arrangements for lunches or collection from school is required. Children will, as always, need to make sure that they are in school promptly at 8:55am, as we will be starting at 9:00am We are all really looking forward to the team working with us, and hope that the children will enjoy it too!

Bigwood Biathlon

On Wednesday 10th September, both year 5 classes will be lucky enough to travel to Southglade Leisure Centre to take part in a biathlon event, organized and ran by the Sports Leaders from Bigwood School. The children are very excited to take part in a swimming challenge and then complete a gruelling long distance run immediately after they have left the pool.

Upon passing the finish line, each child will receive a gold medal and a goodie bag for completing the event. We know that all the children will thoroughly enjoy this event, and hope that this is the first of many sporting achievements that our children can look forward to this year.

Welcome back

Welcome back – we hope you all had a great summer and are ready for the busy term ahead. The autumn tern focusses heavily on building a solid foundation for the year! As always we will be expecting the children to be focussed and ready to learn at all times.

We will be covering a few topics this term including; the history of Medieval times, the art work of LS Lowry and Robin Hood. We will teach mental maths on a Tuesday's and Monday’s English lesson will be focusing on reading comprehension. In addition to this, all English lessons will be started with a Rainbow Grammar Blast; a new initiative rolled out through school. Times Tables tests will also be carried out on Thursday afternoon.

Miss Gethings will be teaching in class 5G all week, and in class 5OB, Miss Ordoyno will be teaching Tuesday – Friday, and Mrs Bird will be in there on a Monday. Mrs Bishell will be supporting both classes all week, with Mr Kelly working with us Tuesday to Thursday. In addition, Miss Pallander will be supporting individual children in 5G in the mornings. Miss Jessop, a student teacher working on the School Direct programme, will also be working with 5G all year, as part of her ongoing training.

Healthy Lifestyles Week

Next Monday will mark the start of our 'Healthy Lifestyles' theme week at school. During the week, the children will be able to take part in a karate workshop, and will learn all about making healthy lifestyle choices linked to our ongoing "Drugs Aware" SEAL topic.

On Tuesday 29th April there will be a 'walking bus' to encourage the children to walk to school. Each child joining the bus will receive a foot sticker and when they finally get to school they will be presented with a foot-shaped pin badge. We hope to see lots of children joining the walking bus, but parents must stay with them on the way!

As we will have such an emphasis on healthy lifestyles, please can you support the school at home by encouraging your children to brush their teeth twice a day, have a bath or shower regularly and to start the day with a healthy breakfast to get their brains working! If your child has a packed lunch then maybe you could spend a little extra time creating an especially healthy lunch together.

Space Centre Trip - 19th June

Year 5 are really excited about their trip to the National Space Centre next half term; a visit they are making because of their upcoming Science topic, "Earth, the Sun and the Moon". Children will have the opportunity to explore a real rocket, learn about the planets in our solar system in the centre's Planetarium and discover lots of interesting facts about the universe.

Our trip to National Space Centre will take place on Thursday 19th June, leaving school at 8:45am and returning for around 4pm. Children will need to bring a packed lunch, should wear full school uniform and can bring a maximum of £5 to spend in the Centre's gift shop.

We think that this is a fantastic opportunity for the children that will extend and supplement their scientific learning during the last half term of Year 5, and we hope that all children will be able to attend.

Summer 1 - Homework Project

For this half-terms homework project - which is going to be taken to Columbia -  we would like you to create a project showing Five Things in my Pocket... This project should detail five things that you could have “in your pocket” that describe you as a person; things that you like, hobbies that you have, sports that you play, etc.
For example, if Mr. Shadbolt were doing this, he might have:
· A photograph of his son
· An Xbox controller, because he likes playing games
· A red pen, for marking children’s work
· A stop-watch to time himself when he goes running
· A bar of chocolate - his favourite sweet!
The items that you have “in your pocket” should be personal to you, and should tell someone else a little about the sort of person that you are!

It is up to you how you present this project, but it needs to be something physical - please don’t make a PowerPoint or computer presentation! You can of course print things from a computer for Miss Blakesley and Miss Cooke to take with them, though!
Here are some ideas for ways that you could present your “five things”:
1. Make a poster! Design a poster that shows the five things that you’ve have in your pocket. Draw pictures of them,  or take photos and stick them on to your  poster. Explain WHY you have these things in your pocket - why do they       represent you? How are they important to you?
2. Sew an actual pocket from material and place five photos of your “things”       inside! Write explanations on the backs of the photos, telling us why those things mean so much to you.
3. Create a collage! Find lots of pictures related to the five things in your pocket and glue them all down to make a picture.
