Languages Theme Week - German

On the week starting Monday 18th November the whole school will be taking part in a Modern Foreign Languages themed week, and we in year 5 will be lucky enough to learn some German! Ja, Deutsch! There will be a number of FREE workshops taking place in school during this week, including the chance to learn Mandarin Chinese and some Capoeira dancing from South America!

We will be teaching a lot of lessons in class based around the country of Germany, and Miss Cooke will be taking off her Spanish sunglasses and putting on a German hat for that week's languages lesson! We're really looking forward to this, as the previous Science themed week last half term was a huge success.

Children in Need 2013 - Be A Hero!

The theme for this year's Children in Need appeal is "Be A Hero!" As such, we would like children to dress up as one of their heroes when they come to school on Friday 15th November - this does not just have to be someone like Batman or Wonder Woman! Your child can dress as someone that is a hero to them; a policeman, a paramedic, a celebrity or a teacher (*hint*hint*). If your child is coming to school in fancy dress, we would ask you to send them with a donation of 50p to £1.

Each year group will also have their own giant cut-out Pudsey Bear to cover with loose change - and the children from the year group that collects the most loose change will receive a special certificate to put in their Record of Achievement! So dig deep, and raid those piggy-banks!

Pudsey Bear wristbands will be on sale from Monday 11th November in the KS2 Hall for £1. Miss Page will also be selling her ever-popular Pudsey Bear badges for 50p at the same time! We have lots of opportunities to raise a stellar amount of money.

Autumn Homework Project [2] - Victorian Celebrities

We are now halfway through our History topic on the Victorians, and we would like YOU to find out a little more about some of the most important people that lived during the 19th Century!
First, you need to choose one of the people from the list below:

Florence Nightingale - Nurse at war
Charles Dickens - Famous author
Doctor Barnado - Charity worker
Charles Darwin - Scientist and explorer

Once you have chosen the person from the list that you are going to find out about, we would like you to research information about them and their life; things that they achieved and their place in history.

You can present the information as:
· A poster
· A factsheet
· A PowerPoint presentation

The homework project is due in on Monday 16th December!

Galleries of Justice - Follow-up

The trip to the Galleries of Justice was a huge success, and the children had a fantastic time learning about crime and punishment in the Victorian Era. Whether it was being made to wear a Dunce's cap in a real Victorian classroom after being insolent to a teacher, or putting on their best acting wigs as solicitors in a mock trial in the courtroom, all of year 5 were involved in the activities that took place throughout the day. Thank you very much for your prompt payment for the trip; we hope that the children had a great time in gaol, and had many tales to tell you when they returned home.

There will be another off-site visit next year, and we are eagerly looking forward to taking the children out once again.

Galleries of Justice Visit

Just a reminder that Year 5 will be visiting the Galleries of Justice on Wednesday 9th October for a Victorian-themed day of activities, including a lesson in a Victorian classroom, a mock trial in the Court and a “Crime and Punishment” tour of the building. Children will need to be in school promptly on the day, ready to leave at 9am. We will be returning before 3:20pm, traffic permitting. Children will need an outdoor coat and a packed lunch. Free school meals will be provided for those children who require them.

Big Wood Biathlon

On Tuesday 24th September, both year 5 classes were lucky enough to travel to Southglade Leisure Centre to take part in a biathlon event organised and ran by the Sports Leaders from Bigwood School. The children were very excited to take part in the two swimming and running events. All children successfully completed the swimming challenge and took part in a gruelling long-distance run immediately after having left the pool!

Upon passing the finish line, each child received a gold medal and a goodie bag for completing the event. We were all really proud of the children for not only taking part, but persevering if they found one of the events a little challenging. We hope that this is the first of many sporting achievements that our children can look forward to this year.

Autumn Homework Project [1] - Instruments

During the Autumn term, one of our science topics in Year 5 is “Changing Sounds!”, a topic based on musical instruments, how sounds are made, change in pitch and travel through the air.

Your homework project this half term is to make a working musical instrument that you can play and that changes pitch.

Remember that there are lots of different types of instruments that make sounds in different ways:
· String instruments - plucking, hitting or strumming
· Percussion instruments - banging or hitting
· Wind instruments - blowing

However, you need to be able to change the pitch of the instrument - it needs to be able to make either a higher or lower sound than the one that it initially produces.

Here are some websites that you can check at home to help you come up with ideas:

Remember that you can decorate your musical instruments to help make them bright and colourful and stand out!

Welcome Back to Year 5!!

Welcome back - we hope you all had a great Summer and are ready for the busy term ahead.  The autumn term focuses heavily on building a solid foundation for the year!  As always, we will be expecting the children to be focused and ready to learn at all times.

We will be covering a few topics this term including; The Victorians, the art of L.S. Lowry and Changing Sounds.  We will teach mental maths on a Wednesday and Friday’s Literacy lesson will be focusing on spelling, punctuation and grammar, in preparation for the new spelling, punctuation and grammar test that has been introduced in Year Six. Times Table tests will be carried out on a Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Shadbolt and Miss Gethings will be teaching in class all week. The exception is Tuesday morning when Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Cook will be covering planning time. Mrs. Bishell will be supporting both classes all week, with Miss Page working with us Tuesday to Thursday mornings. Mr. Williams, a student teacher working on the SCITT programme, will also be working with 5S during the autumn term as part of his ongoing training.

National Space Centre - Trip

Year 5 are really excited about their trip to the National Space Centre in Leiciester next term, a visit they are making because of their upcoming Earth, Sun and Moon science topic. Children will have the opportunity to climb inside and explore a real rocket, learn all about the planets of our Solar System in the Centre’s Planetarium and discover lots of interesting facts about the universe.

Our trip to the National Space Centre will take place on Wednesday 19th June, leaving school just after 9am and returning before 3:20pm. Children will require a packed lunch, should wear school uniform including appropriate footwear and are allowed to bring a maximum of £5 spending money to be spent in the National Space Centre’s gift shop.

The total cost of this trip will be £7, payable either in full or in instalments over the next seven weeks leading up to the trip. We would like to point out that the trip should have cost in excess of £10. However, your children have been working hard to balance a class budget across the course of the year as part of a whole school initiative, and have decided to spend the £90[!] that each class saved on subsidising this trip, lowering the overall cost for parents and carers.

We think that this is a fantastic opportunity that will extend and supplement the children’s scientific learning during the next half-term, and we hope that all children are able to attend.

Homework Project - Timelines

Our History topic in Year 5 this term is "The World since World War II", and the children will be looking at each decade since 1945 in-depth on a weekly basis. This topic will encompass things such as music, world events, politics and the way in which society has changed over the last sixty years.

We would like the children to research and find out how their families have grown and changed over the last sixty years. They can do this by talking to members of their family and putting together a family tree or time-line that details major events that have happened over the last six decades. These should be things that have been important to the 'life' of the family, such as births and marriages, but can also include fun pieces of information that the children do not already know - maybe they could find out about Mum and Dad's first date, or something funny that happened before they were born...?

The children can present their findings in whatever way they like... but here are some suggestions:

  • A labelled time-line or family tree; include photographs!
  • A PowerPoint presentation, from 1945 up to the Present Day
  • A show-and-tell family history - bring in special things from home
  • Draw and annotate a series of pictures showing memorable moments in your family's 'life story'
We look forward to finding out even more about the family life of the children in Year 5, but don't worry - we don't expect people to share anything too private!

Summer Term - New Opportunities

Welcome back to Year 5! We have an exciting term ahead, and two fantastic new opportunities have already been made available to the children...

Every Monday afternoon for this half-term, all of Year 5 are taking part in the Eduskate programme at the National Ice Arena. Our children get the opportunity to ice-skate with qualified and professional instructors for 45 minutes - some of these instructors have even skated at the Winter Olympics! The children can work towards their level 1 or 2 certificates in ice-skating, and are already having tremendous fun - they seem to especially like it when Mr. Shadbolt or Mrs. Nicholson fall over on the ice. As well as ice-skating, they also take part in other lessons which are linked to winter sports and the running of the ice arena.

Every Tuesday afternoon for this half-term, all of Year 5 are also taking part in the E-Racism project that has been ran in school over the last few years. This programme of study is designed to inform the children about different forms of racism, the effects that it can have on individuals and what we can do as a society to try and limit the incidences of racism that occur in the world. The programme is being led by Mr. Hussain, a well-respected employee of the city council who has over fifteen years experience in teaching this area of the curriculum. We are very lucky to have such as informative and interesting tutor who can deal with such an emotional topic in a calm and considered way.

There will be a E-Racism graduation later in the term that parents and carers will be invited to, and more information about this will be sent home nearer the time.

WARNING! IMPENDING HOMEWORK ALERT!

For the second Spring half term, the children will be undertaking a project called "Good To Be Me", linked to the SEAL lessons taught in school. We would like the children to 'sell themselves', telling others in whatever format they wish, just how good they are! They could:
  • Describe something that they are good at
  • Tell others about their personality and give examples
  • Sing a song about themselves
  • Produce posters - think "Election time"
  • Write a rap! [Mrs. Kelly will be performing one herself]
  • Draw a picture of themselves doing something they're great at
  • Pen a poem about their awesomeness
We are really looking forward to seeing what the children produce. There is no right or wrong way of presenting; just have fun and show us why you are all so great!

Upcoming: GREAT Project

As part of our ongoing SEAL work, after half term, the children will be undertaking a four-week project called the GREAT Project. This will allow children to have a greater understanding of healthy and unhealthy relationships, and promote equal gender respect. Children will also have a greater awareness of domestic violoence and it's effects.

We are really looking forward to this exciting opportunity, and feel sure that the children will benefit from it a great deal!

Top Valley Academy Visits

As part of our Geography topic on rivers, we have been going to Top Valley Academy on Friday mornings in our individual classes to record our very own podcasts!  The children have been using audio recording programmes, microphones and their own scripts to put together two minute performances about the charity Wateraid.  They have been learning about and describing how the charity helps different communitites in many different countries around the world.  They then presented their findings.

Homework Project - Spring Term One

Hello Bloggers!

This half term's homework project is to build a rain catcher at home and use it to measure the amount of rainfall between 11th January and 11th February.  You can build the rain catcher in any way you wish but it remember you have to be able to measure the rainfall in cm.  Your results need recording (at least 10 times) and bringing into school, with your rain catcher if you wish, by 12th February 2013.

Enjoy!
